Letter reading "Private - Hudson's Bay Company. Isle a la Crosse 27th March 1901 - My dear Angus, I find I have to send to G.L.[Green Lake] again to drop you a few lines. So McDougall did get back to [?] to meet the packet. I had a private letter from him he expects to get a change from this Dist soon will I cannot say in many ways the Dist won't be the looser [ie loser], he is by his management sending the Dist to the devil as fast as possible and remember even when he sees [?] cannot-but-see how his [?] is working would try and shift the blame on to other peoples shoulders. I will give you an instance - you know our instructions regarding debts. I write him giving him an instance of how his instructions are working after New Year. La Grippe and influenza broke out among the Indians here - the opposition had no flour and of course they came to one remember good times some of the best as Isle a la Crosse requesting one to give them flour on debt - of course I had to refuse according to instructions [?] and [?] sent and got in flour which they gave out in debt since then I have got very little furs from those Indians I wrote McDougall and mentioned the facts to him, he turns around and [?] one that I should have given those Indians provisions - now if I did so in the first place and some of them from some came in also were unable to pay one, then he would he the first - [?] - accuse me of giving advances to Indians against his instructions. McDougall is not a straight forward man by any means. He will always turn the blame on others shoulders and where credit comes in will soon take it himself. Now already boats for summer, freighting at this place I wrote him about getting a new [?] built - that he Outfit one in P.A. that he had, [?] down for me at G.L. large enough to bring down all or nearly all the Outfit, and as he said so I defended upon him he now writes [?] he was [?] when at Isle a la Crosse last that the boats were good for two summers yet and that I should have mentioned the subject to him last November what the devil did I know about the boats last fall they will sink in the Bay and remained there till we hauled them up before the Ice took. Then he says he told Old Vincent at Ilse a la Crosse to get boards sawn and dried to build a flat boat this Spring. [?] [?] Vincent who denies hearing McDougall mention anything on the subject. Now I suppose he will blame you for our freight not being all at G.L. He is an old fraud, he should retire. I have heard no very particular news form the outside world - [?] is accountant in Lake Superior District . I hear [?] the proposed pension will come into effect after in the H.B. Company meeting in London next July - I would [?] [?] bet that is what McD is waiting for. Bustin[?], Beecher, Hall, Milne and McDougall are all in Winnipeg God knows what they are all doing. Hall used to be in charge of British Columbia the "Western Department" it is now called British Columbia District and under charge of a clerk called Thompson who was at one time in charge of the Calgary store. There is great change predicted in the HB Service in the near future what they are I cannot say. I for one at all events am going to make a change for myself. With kind regards to Mrs McKay and hoping you are all well and wishing you a pleasant Spring, I remain, Yours truly, Thos Anderson"

Letter reading "Phone 1461 Chaffey and Verhoeven Block, 289 Garry Street - B.E. Chaffey, Barrister, Solicitor, Notary Publice &c - Winnipeg, Man. 6th March, 1909. Dear Sir:- I have yours of 30th Jany. The market for scrip is dull and there is no money to be made at the prices here although scrip is comparative low. Now whenever I want money scrip, or land scrip and ask for them the parties say they are sending north and expect to get some in. Now couldn't you buy this scrip from me at first hand in the north, so that I could save that commission. Another point, I expect Mr McLean will go north this Spring in June to issue scrip, could not I make an arrangement with you to buy some of the scrip for me. You could possibly arrange it with some person at the poasts [ie posts] where scrip will be issued. I don't think it would pay to send a man from here on that purpose, as he might not get enough scrip to pay expences [ie expenses], and the man I had in view coming from that country is not trust-worthy. And it is dangerous proceeding to place money in the hands of a party you are not sure of. Is it advisable in such a case to deposit the money with the Hudson's Bay Company here and get a credit on their poasts [ie posts], or to send the actual cash. Of course the former is the most convenient and safe. But in detailing with the Natives here they always wanted cash in their hand. Please give this matter consideration and let me hear from you. I am also expecting now at any time to have the deeds and papers expected from you. Your truly, B.E. Chaffey - Angus McKay, Esq. Isle a la Crosses c/o Hudson's Bay Co, Prince Albert"

Letter reading "Incorporated A.D. 1670 Hudson's Bay Company. Private. Isle a la Crosse 11th Feby 1902 - My dear Mr McKay, There is no strange news in this quarter that would interest you nonetheless I drop you a few lines. Mr [?] returned a few days ago from La Loche where he went after New Year to assist Clarke in making up his books and accounts. Clarke is doing well so far. Mr Greenwood from Fort McMurray or Little Red River paid a visit to La Loche he reported having far more fur inland than Tommy Clark at same date. I believe they have splendid returns at Fort Chipewyan I suppose it will be the same all over the country as the season was so favorable for hunting. I expect to have $12000 by the time the March packet goes out. Marcelin I hear leaves here in a few days for G.L. and Duck Lake he is sending me his furs and it would not break my heart if he never came back. He could make money himself by his trading and [?] other by his high prices he paid 600 and 700 [?] for Silver Foxes he claims he did not pay old accounts (last [?] debts) but he had paid of it those some parties [?] up that same amount a year in new advances. Marcelin will never make money that is one time thing. The [?] hardly any snow here yet - its a wonderful winter. The Natives are all well the settlers enjoying Government flour and Bacon feasting and going in marriage which is all right while it lasts. I see the war in South Africa is still lingering on when is it to come to an end. I expect we will get a mail by this opportunity if your mail man is on time. I am pretty busy at present - there are always people around coming and going all the time. As I will see you soon I will write no more at present. Hoping you are all well and passing a pleasant winter. I remain yours truly, Thos Anderson. P.S. I saw by the newspapers that [?] had a shock of paralysis or something of that sort last Fall poor [?] I am sorry for him. T.A. "

Letter reading "Incorporated A.D. 1670. The Hudson's Bay Company. Personal. Prince Albert, Sask. Jan. 18th. 1907. Dear Sir, Mr. Cumines came in a few days ago intending to take out a stock of goods, about two sleigh loads, with which to do some trading for himself. He relied principally on his share of the "scrip deal" for the money which to buy. He selected stock from the stores up town, Geo. Baker's, Fred Baker's etc. etc., which they had packed ready for his departure today. Unfortunately for Cumines, Coleridge would not stand to the bargain made and he had no money to pay for the goods selected which the merchants, I learn, will not let go without the cash down. I believe Cumines gave Coleridge a tongue threshing yesterday at the "Windsor" calling him a thief, liar, etc. in the presence of many witnesses. Cumines is, I think, still in town. From Cumines I have learned that Coleridge, he believes, had possession of Halcrow's scrip certificates, transfers, etc. and if such be true it is doubtful if he will ever see them or the proceeds again. He will tell them "You put no money into this business." McDonald, I believe, was bought out pretty cheap by Colerdige for T.O. Davis and I think took a considerable part of his pay in lad at Warman of doubtful value. Cumines tells me that he was promised $1,000.000 for his fidelity and work for the "gang" and he heartily wishes he had smashed the combination as he could have done. It is doubtful if McDonald or Halcrow will come out of the deal as well as if they had taken their chances with the rest as we did. Cumines I suppose will go back to Isle a la Crosses and when he gets there he will spread consternation among those who, like himself, are awaiting their reward for the infidelity to the Company. Yours faithfully, [?] - Angus McKay Esq., Isle a la Crosse - I hope my [?] on this "Personal" does not cause the [?] the Crowe-Lockhart did! even if it is 50 years later!!"

Letter reading "Incorporated A.D. 1670 Hudson's Nay Company - Private - Isle a la Crosse 15th Jany 1902 - My dear Angus, There is no news of any importance in this part of his Majesties domain but as I find an opportunity I drop you a few lines. I am all alone at present - [?] I sent to La Loche after New Years to help Sedley to square up his books and accounts but he will be back again before the send of the month. I am not getting much fur this month but still more than this month last year. I have not heard from my Outposts since New Year the Indians are having fine weather for hunting. Andrew Boyd dies around Christmas Time he was a very decent fellow I was sorry for him. The time is passing here as pleasantly as one can expect in an inland Post. I hear my friend Marcelin is getting pretty sick of fur trading. I don't think he will trouble the company long at this place. I hear there is very little probability of Scrip being issued at Isle a la Crosse next summer the Grits[?] will hold in [?] near election times. I had a letter from Christie he was well also one from Bell the latter was in an Office in London when he wrote - he will find a considerable difference between La Loche and London. I see by the papers the C P Railroad is coming with to Prince Albert. It will boom the place at least for a time it looked like if it required it. I am sending a couple of letters for the mail please post them. Send the Cardigan Jacket if you possibly can I was obliged to sell my own to an Indian and [?] it replaced so charge it to Isle a la Crosse I am getting greatly short of [?] I calculated I will come up to the $18,000 if not more. I [?] [?] I should pay one of my Outposts get 21 Marten skins from one Indian [?] New Year. I hear there is lots of opposition in the lower part of the Saskatchewan District - we have had our share it is their turn now where there is opposition it is better that there should be strong opposition several parties as they sooner kill each other out. I had a letter lately from Nicol[?] Snider he is trying to get his pension from the H.B.C. the Lord help us he gave the Company great assistance last summer when we were newly stuck fro freighters. He deserves a pension. The proposed pension fund being carried by the H.B.C. I hear is only for Clerks and other employees which I am glad to hear as it is only fair the Commissioned Officers got their Salaries and return allowance for a number of years. McDougall I hear has sent in his resignation about time for him McDougall, Clarke and others will leave in disgust now they learn no pension for them. Hoping to see you early in March and with respect to Mrs McKay and all the family, I remain, yours truly, Thos. Anderson"

The water is still very high on this Lake and still seems to be rising the settlers will find difficulty in getting hay they will have to sell of most of their stock. Letter reading "Incorporated A.D. 1670 Hudson's Bay Company. Private. Isle a la Crosse 23rd July 1901 - My dear McKay, The long expected but welcome batteaux arrived here in the morning of the 22nd and delivered this [?] in good [?] with the exception of Francois Keys[?] batteaux the contents of which were considerably damaged. I am afraid I will have to get more flour to replace that which is damaged. The Shipping Bills did not come [?] [?] - I now return Case and 1 Bale belonging to C-D 10 - sent on by mistake. We are very busy at present opening [?], paying Chipewyan and some of the pieces short may have been overlooked but I will find out soon what we are still short of. I was too bad this accidentally [?] to the Guides Batteaux as the rest came through in good order although they took long enough to do it your Green Lake men I don't think arrived [?] [?]. Mr [?] [?] tried to play the big dog here but got left[?] he said your promised them they would get on skiff to return with which you also mentioned in your letter to me which I found strange as you knew my returns were not all send and waiting for the Green Lake men to return. I told him and the rest of his comrades that I was sending a batteaux to G.L. and that they would get a passage up. This fellow, [?] [?] said he was not going to work going up so I told him if he preferred to walk he could do so. I gave them a little of my mind they seem to be d_d independent perhaps this is the last chance they will ever get there is any amount of men here and no trouble getting them there less you have to do with them the better. We were greatly hard up for flour before the batteaux arrived we only had a few lbs on hand. I am greatly busy at the present starting boats for La Loche and [?] River and [?] [?]. I expect to get them all off to their winter [?] soon and will leave for Prince Albert on Winnipeg myself about the middle of August let me know how I am get from G.L to Prince Albert at that time. Sedley Clarke is here at present. He is also doing well it has been a favorable season all round for hunting. We are anxious to hear from Civilization. I hope we will have the return packet here by Christmas. I forgot to mention to you in my official letter about Kennedy's canoe[?]. He wrote me in the fall about payment for the use of it. Very dear Sir, It is a great pleasure for me write you a few lines in haste to let you know that we reach Isle a la Crosse Saturday evening in very good health thanks God. I find every body enjoying good health at the Mission, but a few people in the point are unwell. They catch the grippe again. I hope they will be all right before long. We heard that a poor man called Samuel Squirrel dead suddenly. He was coming from from the La Loche River with Alex Laliberte. He was joyful and walking all night. Suddenly he fell down on the road. They took him home at Buffalo River when he died a few hours after. Is that I heard. I hope that the poor man was ready to appear before his judge. We must always be ready, life is so short that death is always near us. Happy will be the man dying in peace and in love with God. Since I left Green Lake I never forget our good friends and benefactors. Not only the time I was en route, but [?] yesterday, being with all my good people of I.C. like in family very often my thoughts and my heart were with our good friends of Green Lake. Letter reading "Incorporated A.D. 1670 Hudson's Bay Company Prince Albert, 13th march 1901 - Mr Angus McKay, Green Lake, Dear Sir, I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letters (eight) today dated the 4th, 7th, 8th, 15th March respectively along with accompanying documents. Two bags shot are being forwarded by the return [?] for P.L.L. Be good enough to see that it is sent forward along with the [?]: + socks you are to supply. It is impossible to get freighters to go from here to Green Lake as all know that there is no hay to be got beyond P. Laroudes. What a miserable lot those Green Lakes [?] must be. It will be better for you to obtain about 5 tons of hay this summer for next winters freighting and have it well stacked in an enclosure at the stable. It should not cost more than $4.00 or $5.00 per ton stacked as mentioned. Under the circumstances I do not see any way out of your difficulty to get in a supply of ammunition for Posts 10 + 11 but to send the two or three trains of dogs that are coming up from Isle a la Crosse, out to Cadiouse. By caching their fish for return trip, or their way out out, they could render 500 [?] each sled if the dogs are good but they could take 480 [?] each at any rate. Get forward the I.C. + P.L.L. freight first; what is most regretting [?] [?] the seed for your [?]. Why does not Sinclair and Louis sow oats & If they would feed their horses they would get work out of there. Send Mr Bell three tins of Baking Powder for his own use and we will return it to you by mail. The Company has no credit at present with the Imperial Bank and I therefore send you a cheque on the Prince Albert Sale Shop which you can endorse and send to the Imperial Bank or to any person. It will be honored at presentation for the amount $95.00 which has been charged to your account. As there is now a monthly mail to Green Lake you will have all opportunity of keeping me posted about the trade of your post. Some of the freight for Outfit 1901, having been delivered at Green Lake during the winter is going to create a great deal of confusion and keep the work back during the summer. When will the Green Lakes be able to come out - They should be able I think to come in May to have loads rendered ready for the first boat from Ilse a la Crosse. Yours faithfully, J. McDougall"
