Two letters describing service of the sons of W. F. Mathews. A. Y. Mathews enlisted in the 1st Universities Overseas Expedition in 1918, and later joined reinforcements for the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, in the Machine Gun Section. Wounded twice, he went on to officer's training and became a Lieutenant in The Princess Wales Yorkshire Regiment. Matthews was later reported killed in action. The other Mathews son, Harvey, enlisted in the 196th Battalion in 1916, became ill, but was otherwise unharmed.
