How glad were we to hear that our [?] girl was safe over her first tumble and danger, and that you were the proud and happy parents of a thumping boy. It is most wonderful that she got over it so easily. No doubt the healthy life she has been leading had much to do with it. So you got my letter in time to give it my name. Was [?] [?] in saying I thought you had slightly miscalculated the time, I was quite sure he would be born early in April, but we never thought it have come the last day but on [?] March. I assure you we are all happy and relieved and congratulate you both and wish the little mortal, all happiness and prosperity and hope he may be your comfort and support when you come to be old. Give my girl a good kiss for me, and my grandson to fancy my being a grandfather, I don't feel a bit like one, not more than I did before. Is there a postal savings bank at Prince Albert yet. If so I was thinking I might endow the young [?] at once with a Savings Bank account which might accumulate til he comes of age and be something for him then worth having. Ask Annie which she would prefer that or the usual cup or spoon [?] and let me know by June packet there is plenty of time to write after you get this. And now good bye god bless you both all though I say I [?] write more fully by mail meanwhile with all love, Your affec father in law, J. Fortescue"

Letter to Angus McKay from B.E. Chaffey :

Description
-
Letter reading "Phone 1461 Chaffey and Verhoeven Block, 289 Garry Street - B.E. Chaffey, Barrister, Solicitor, Notary Publice &c - Winnipeg, Man. 6th March, 1909. Dear Sir:- I have yours of 30th Jany. The market for scrip is dull and there is no money to be made at the prices here although scrip is comparative low. Now whenever I want money scrip, or land scrip and ask for them the parties say they are sending north and expect to get some in. Now couldn't you buy this scrip from me at first hand in the north, so that I could save that commission. Another point, I expect Mr McLean will go north this Spring in June to issue scrip, could not I make an arrangement with you to buy some of the scrip for me. You could possibly arrange it with some person at the poasts [ie posts] where scrip will be issued. I don't think it would pay to send a man from here on that purpose, as he might not get enough scrip to pay expences [ie expenses], and the man I had in view coming from that country is not trust-worthy. And it is dangerous proceeding to place money in the hands of a party you are not sure of. Is it advisable in such a case to deposit the money with the Hudson's Bay Company here and get a credit on their poasts [ie posts], or to send the actual cash. Of course the former is the most convenient and safe. But in detailing with the Natives here they always wanted cash in their hand. Please give this matter consideration and let me hear from you. I am also expecting now at any time to have the deeds and papers expected from you. Your truly, B.E. Chaffey - Angus McKay, Esq. Isle a la Crosses c/o Hudson's Bay Co, Prince Albert"

Letter for Memorial of Chief Factor MacFarlane :
-
Institution

Univesity Library, University of Saskatchewan
-
Description
-
Letter entitled " The Hudson's Bay Company Memorial of Chief Factor MacFarlane" reading "To The Governor and Committee of the Hudson's Bay Company, Gentlemen, In accordance with the request contained in the Minute of your proceedings of the 20th April last, I beg to lay before you in writing a Statement of the case of the Commissioned Officers of the Company, trusting that you will give the same the attention which the importance of the matter demands. As a Chief Factor and one who has been engaged in the service of the Company for upwards of 35 years, I am intimately acquainted both with the working of the Fur Trade and also personally with the feelings and opinions of my fellow Commissioned Officers and as such I now address you on my own and on their behalf. I am sorry to have to bring before you the fact that our position has been lately rapidly growing worse and that although our responsibilities and labours remain as great as ever and our living expenses have increased, our remuneration has decreased and our prospects of improvement have dwindled away to almost nothing. We, who have been long in the service, can look back on the days when the Officers used to retire on sufficient competence after a hard life of toil, whilst we ourselves see no prospect of ever doing much beyond making a bare living for ourselves and families. On this head I would call attention to the fact that I believe this is perhaps the only Association of equal importance and permanent character which does not provide retiring pensions for its Officers and this can only be explained by the fact that in bygone days the profits of the Officers were sufficient to enable them to put by money and that if this had not been the case, the necessity of pensions would long ago have arisen. The fact I mention of the great falling off in the Commissioned Officers prospects is well known to you. The Statement of Profits I left with you recently, show that the profits per share used to be over 490 [pounds] a year, whereas now they are little over 200 [pounds] a year. This is attributable to the sale of the Company's chartered rights to the Canadian Government, to the Railroad building and influx of Settlers, to the heavy duties now levied on Imports and generally to the competition in the Fur Trade which has almost doubled the prices we now have to pay for Furs. Several of these reasons whilst operating disadvantageously to us as Partners in the Fur Trade, are for the great benefit of the Shareholders generally notably the influx of settlers and consequent sales of land by which the capital of the Company is being repaid whilst we the Officers who originally shared in all the profits of the Company are now practically limited to that part of the business which suffers most by the very causes which make the prosperity of the other part. I respectfully submit on behalf of the Commissioned Officers that when the minimum guaranteed income of each Share was fixed at 200 [pounds] it was the intention that this should be the minimum paid in bad years, and it was believed that this would be supplemented in ordinary years by the profits which were anticipated and which would have considerably increased the amount. As a matter of fact, this minimum proves to be practically the maximum and all considerable chances of saving which the profits used to allow of have disappeared. Under the circumstances I beg that the Governor and Directors take into their earnest consideration the necessity of raising the minimum guarantee on each share to at least 250 [pounds] a year, the lowest sum, I submit, on which the Officers can maintain themselves properly and save something, and further that if at the end of 5 years it appears that the sums paid on each share under guarantee and profits have not amounted to 300 [pounds] a year then that the deficiency be made up in the 5th year. I should point out on this head that if the Commercial business should prove as profitable as is hoped this additional guarantee will entail no cost upon the Company. As a minor point, but still one of importance to the Offices I would call attention to the fact that the Tariff of Stores for Commissioned Officers, which, according to the Standing Rules and Regulations was fixed at 33 1/3 per Cent on prime cost, has been altered by you without consulting the Officers as is now fixed at 10 per cent above cost landed. This change makes a very material difference to the Officers and it seems to me a curtailment of their privileges without their sanction to the change being first sought or obtained in any way. There are sundry other small points which have arisen but which it is not necessary to trouble you with. They can be laid before the Fur Trade Council next year. Although I am in London alone and sign this Memorial on my own responsibility, I am confident that I express the opinion of my fellow Officers, and that although we are all doing our best and working hard for the interests of the Company, we cannot help feeling and seeing the the greatest concern that the future of ourselves and our families has been seriously prejudiced by the changes which have taken place, which have all operated to our disadvantage and for which we have received no adequate compensation. You will pardon my apparent insistence on this matter. As one of your oldest Officers I have the best interests of the Company and of my fellow Officers at heart, and I feel convinced that it is your desire that we should do our work, not only zealously, but also hopefully, which we cannot do under our present circumstances. I am, Gentlemen, Your obedient Servant, R. MacFarlane Chief Factor - Salisbury Hotel, London, 1 May 1886"

Letter reading "Incorporated A.D. 1670 Hudson's Bay Company Prince Albert, 13th march 1901 - Mr Angus McKay, Green Lake, Dear Sir, I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letters (eight) today dated the 4th, 7th, 8th, 15th March respectively along with accompanying documents. Two bags shot are being forwarded by the return [?] for P.L.L. Be good enough to see that it is sent forward along with the [?]: + socks you are to supply. It is impossible to get freighters to go from here to Green Lake as all know that there is no hay to be got beyond P. Laroudes. What a miserable lot those Green Lakes [?] must be. It will be better for you to obtain about 5 tons of hay this summer for next winters freighting and have it well stacked in an enclosure at the stable. It should not cost more than $4.00 or $5.00 per ton stacked as mentioned. Under the circumstances I do not see any way out of your difficulty to get in a supply of ammunition for Posts 10 + 11 but to send the two or three trains of dogs that are coming up from Isle a la Crosse, out to Cadiouse. By caching their fish for return trip, or their way out out, they could render 500 [?] each sled if the dogs are good but they could take 480 [?] each at any rate. Get forward the I.C. + P.L.L. freight first; what is most regretting [?] [?] the seed for your [?]. Why does not Sinclair and Louis sow oats & If they would feed their horses they would get work out of there. Send Mr Bell three tins of Baking Powder for his own use and we will return it to you by mail. The Company has no credit at present with the Imperial Bank and I therefore send you a cheque on the Prince Albert Sale Shop which you can endorse and send to the Imperial Bank or to any person. It will be honored at presentation for the amount $95.00 which has been charged to your account. As there is now a monthly mail to Green Lake you will have all opportunity of keeping me posted about the trade of your post. Some of the freight for Outfit 1901, having been delivered at Green Lake during the winter is going to create a great deal of confusion and keep the work back during the summer. When will the Green Lakes be able to come out - They should be able I think to come in May to have loads rendered ready for the first boat from Ilse a la Crosse. Yours faithfully, J. McDougall"
