Description: Letter reading "Fort MacMurray February 19th/84 - Dear Angus, The Packet is just to hand, and it is with great sorrow that I read of the death of your kind Old Father in whose company I have spent many a pleasant hour it is hard to realize it as he was such a strong active man when I last saw him. I can sympathize with you in this bereavement with all my heart. You have lost what mankind holds most sacred, the love of a kind Father. It is an ordeal that we have all got to go through so my dear fellow you must bear up manfully against it hard as it is and you will feel all the better for it. Grief will only tend to undermine your health. I have some news that may be of interest to you. I was married on Jan 25th at Fort Chipewyan to Miss Emma Christie, Gus Clarke was "best man", the Honeymoon lasted 15 days when I was obliged to leave her to run after a Trader is is in this Locality and I will not see my Wife again until the middle of June and then but for a short time as I have to Superintend the opening of a new Cart Road across Portage La Loche which will be close upon 37 Miles long and will take up to September or October to build. I may then pass the Winter at Fort Chipewyan so as yet I have not derived much comfort from being married, however I would prefer any length of separation in preference to bringing her to this miserable, lonely hole; despite her assure that she would be happy anywhere with me. Gus is the most Manly young fellow I ever met, I don't know that I ever met any one for whom I took such a fancy as I have for him he is like a Brother to me he is getting Fat and has improved fifty percent since he came out he will be a strapping big fellow yet and a clever man if he continues as he is and there is nothing that I can see to prevent his building up his constitution. Mr and Mrs McFarlane like him very much in fact he is a favorite with every one. Give my kind regards to Mr and Mrs Clarke and with every kind wish for your welfare believe me Ever Your Sincere Friend, W. Scott Simpson"
