Description

Image of veneer emerging from dryer. Photo taken at Saskatchewan-owned lumber mill in Canoe, B.C. Explanatory note pasted onto photo: “Veneer emerging from the dyer where it has been subjected to a temperature of 350°. The dryer has 8 levels or lines on which the veneer is carried. It is 70’ long and has two circulating fans each of 63” diameter and each is powered by a 125 hp. electric motor. The speed at which veneer passes through the dryer is determined by the moisture content and may take anywhere from 6 minutes to 28 minutes. As the veneer drops from the dryer it is carried by belt through the machine shown at left which automatically registers the moisture content. If the moisture remaining in the veneer is above 4% or 5%, the machine marks the particular sheet with a red dot. Such pieces of veneer are returned from a second trip through the dryer.”

Image detailing the mechanisms of a lumber mill in Canoe, B.C. Man with hand on lever visible on left-hand side of photo. A small caption pointing toward his hand indicates he is operating a push button control panel. Further information about cut-off saws (visible in foreground) pasted on top of photo: “The cut-off saws which cut the logs into the required lengths, usually up to 6” or 7” longer than the finished length of 8’ because of the shrinkage which takes place in drying. At the right is the barker. Logs are spun around on a wheeled carrier and a steel head which moves along the length of the log removes the bark. At this point the logs become known as “Bolts.” Sorting of species, such as spruce, fir, hemlock, etc., is also done here.”
