Various conflicting reports here as to safety of Crozier and Irvines commands News of formers reverse has created considerable alarm it is now feared that Edmonton half breeds are on the war path government have been repeatedly notified that arms & equipment will be needed here but they pay no attention they will be asked to suspend the law prohibiting loyal men from drilling in order that our newly formed volunteer mounted infantry Corps may not be prevented from drilling with their own weapons faithful friends of the government here cannot understand apathy at headquarters

A party of Croziers men were fired on by an over whelming number of rebels in an outbreak near Duck Lake yesterday police followed and dispersed rebels killing many & returned to Carlton where they found Irvine & one hundred men & 28 additional volunteers from prince albert Hayter Reid is there 25 police left here for Carlton this a m & a company of Civilian volunteers went on duty in Barracks a home guard is also formed on indians perfectly quiet not withstanding contrary reports following is killed & wounded Police killed William Gibson wounded Inspector Howe flesh wound Corp Gilchrist Const Manners Smith Du Arnold Do A Miller Const J J Wood Do M Miller 11 Sydney Gorden Prince Albert Volunteers killed S E Elliott Wm Napier R Middleton J Anderson Daniel McKenzie Backney Chas Neville Alex Fisher Danl McPhail Capt Morris wounded Capt Moore leg broken since amputated A W R Markley A McNab Alex Stewart this police & Prince Albert volunterrs behaved in splendid manner exhibiting a degree of coolness & courage that is beyond all praise the whole country is fearfully aroused & determined to press matters to an end

Just received following from T G Shaughnessy about four hundred troops to be forwarded to Winnipeg via our line reaching end of. abbotts track late tomorrow probably you were advised from Ottawa already if not please prepare to take care of men horses & ammunition over your section our people particularly anxious that this be done will please keep Egan advised so he may be ready for them when they reach Nepigon Middleton advises that Jas Praser at Dog Lake will be good man to assist you over gaps between tracks and has telegraphed him to report to Mr Abbott at End of track No doubt you have plenty of provisions for both officers & men following from W G Vanhorne troops from Kingston & Quebec going forward today Keep yourself well posted as to the movement from abbott following from abbott a & B batteries are on way up have you teams enough to take them over gaps if not could send some contractors leave to assist reply think cars should be at Nepigon Thursday at latest will advise you later
