"Indians Tribes have risen and are now on every side of Battleford & have been plundering stores & driving off stock & have them corralled at Pound Makers The Stonies killed Payne Freeman Cunningham & Geo Applegarth = Indians at Fort Pitt have killed T T Quinn John Deleaney Persfarrar & Marchand & two Low brothers Wiliscroft Gouin Gilchrist & Mr & Mrs Gowan Its believed it is the intention of the Indians to exterminate the Whites - Courcers have been sent out to meet Herchimer and Warn him of his danger & Battleford & Fort Pitt said to be in a very precarious position Fort Pitt calling for help from Battleford but that place being powerless to render any assistance - Every precaution has been taken by officer in charge at Battleford and he hopes to be able to cope with the Indians Should they make an attack but is anxious to have assistance as soon as possible as there are about four hundred Women & Childred in barracks

Just reed following from John Ross In order to have no delay as soon as we learned troops were to pass over the line we commenced digging the road out of winter snow from Gravel River to within 7 miles of Nepigon where we leave the line and take the ice to Red Rock think best place to load about 1/2 mile west of Red Rock hope to have 1st Detachment of 200 artillery there friday evening I suppose they will expect supper when they reach Red Rock we will give them Bread & Pork east of Red Rock we have no other meat John Ross I will be able to load them by putting down a few rails to small siding that is now there

Ottawa On behalf of myself & my people I wish to send through you to the Great Mother the words I have given to the Governor at a council held at which all my minor Chiefs & young men were present we are agreed and determined to remain loyal to the Queen our young men will go to work on their reserves and will raise all the crops we can and we hope the Government will help us to sell wha we can raise continued reports and many lies are brought to us and- we don't know what to believe but now that we have seen the Governor and heard him speak we will shut our ears and only listen to and believe what is told to us through the Governor should any Indians come to our reserves and ask us to join them in war we will send them away I have sent messengers to the Bloods and Peigan who belong to our treaty to tell them what we are doing & what we intend to do about the trouble I want Mr Dewdney to be with us & all my men are of the same mind words I sent by Father Lacombe I answered we will be Loyal to the Queen whatever happens I have copy of this and when the trouble is over will have it with pride to show to the Queens men & we leave our future in your hands we have asked for nothing but the Governor has given us a lot of present of tea & tobacco he will tell you what other talk we had at our Council, it was all good not a bad- word

Farmer instructor applegarth with wife and sister arrived here this am he was located on Red Pheasant reserve twenty five miles south east of Battleford. he had no Knowledge of the uprising until his house was raided by Indians at three am tuesday last. They disarmed him and two Indians felt in all of his pockets for money the Chief advised him to leave as soon as possible or his men would Kill him and not to go towards Battleford as breeds were guarded and he would be shot when he left the Indians were ran-sacking his house six Indians followed them for about two days when Applegarth overtook Judge Rouleau and party of six ladies on their way from Battleford the Indians then stopped The Indians told Applegarth when they arrived at his house that the Stonies had killed farmers instructor Payne as they did not like him and had Killed a farmer named Freeman for resisting when they attempted to steal his stock the Indians destroyed the furniture in houses around Battleford and carried off all the stock and provisions all of the Battleford district Indians are now Congregating in Sounding lake reserve about six miles north west from Battleford and claim they expect three hundred Sioux from American side The Indians demolished what they did not wish to carry off in all the houses and stores raided by them and have taken every horse and head of Cattle in that part of the Country A E Fenton
