Image of a man in a robe and hood - "By the late 1860's the Klan was raging throughout the South. Its membership was estimated in the hundreds of thousands, and there were countless instances of whippings, lynchings and murders. By 1871 a Congressional Committee provided evidence of the Klan's brutal activities. The federal government sent troops to the South and the Klan was forcibly disbanded - Uniform worn by an officer of the Ku Klux Klan in Marshall County, Tennessee. It is of red calico, with white trimmings; the head-dress of red flannel, with white mask ornamented with red starts (from the collection of Lucius E. Burch, Jr., Memphis Tennessee)."
